What is Eagle Guard

Eagle Guard is a unique combination of performing arts and athletics.  Our members are

ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, ATHLETES, DANCERS, TWIRLERS, AND LEADERS

The New Albany Eagle Guard serves as the auxiliary section of the New Albany Marching Band. In our program history, this group has explored many different performance styles and gone by many names. We believe that Eagle Guard is a long-lasting name that will fit all performance styles as our team grows.

Eagle Guard includes (and is not limited to)

1.     Color Guard - Flag

2.     Drill/Dance Team

3.     Drum Major(ette)s – Baton

We are proud to offer our members the opportunity to explore the many different performance styles traditionally performed alongside the Marching Band. While our style and name have changed over the years, our adaptability is our strength.  Our ability to meet the needs and interests of our members allows us to continue to serve our community.

Adaptability - Community - Inclusivity - Professionalism

We strive to give meaning and purpose to our performance while also allowing our members to learn valued skills that will reach beyond the field.  We believe that focusing on our core values of Adaptability, Community, Inclusivity, and Professionalism sets a strong base for the program and member development.

 Professionalism

In addition to the music and performance skills that our students learn in class, we value our students as young professionals. Professionalism is how we carry ourselves at performances, interact with others, and present ourselves. Our students carry themselves in a way that allows New Albany Band to continuously be recognized for their professionalism and as a pillar of the community. Professionalism allows our program to be successful and sets the ground work for our students to stand out as they journey on after their time at New Albany High School.

 Adaptability

Our team spends months preparing for the football season. They invest their time to work on techniques, and showmanship while learning and perfecting routines. With many moving parts, there is always a plan in place. As to be expected, we are one of many moving parts to the machine that is Friday Night Football.  Being able to adjust and adapt quickly is not only valued but an everyday practice for success during a performance.

 Community

We are grateful to be surrounded by great support and a wonderful community. We look to serve our community where we can. We are more than part of the community, we strive to be active contributors and are looking forward to growing our community presence in the future.

 Inclusivity

From beginner to professional, if you can move you can dance. Eagle Guard is a safe place to learn and move with like-minded individuals. Our members are welcoming and encouraging students of New Albany High School who are excited to include anyone looking to explore color guard dance and other activities of a spirit squad. Our members work to make sure the team environment is welcoming so that any interest can be explored.

FAQs

  • No! We welcome students of all skill levels. We teach all the skills we will ask our students to utilize throughout the season. As part of our mission, we aim to teach and sharpen skills for students of all skill levels. Our movements are based on jazz, and our routines combine jazz and twirling for a fun performance.

  • In the summer the Color Guard will meet occasionally to work on skills and routines. The Color Guard participates in all the pre-camp, band camp, and post-camp practices with the Marching Band. Once school starts, practices are 2-3 times a week after school as well as Fridays with the Marching Band after school before Friday night performances. Color Guard members wanting to practice with the band during school may either take a Study Center during the same period as a band class or they may also enroll in a band class and play an instrument for the remainder of the year.

  • As Color Guard is an entirely extra-curricular the NAPLS Administrative Offices will collect an Activity Fee of $125. Members are also required to purchase and maintain their own uniforms.

  • YES! There is lots to do on and off the field for halftime and sidelines!

  • Yes. Marching Band and Color Guard members may pick up a physical education waiver from the guidance office and have it signed by the band director after the marching band season (late October). Two waivers total (two separate years or used in combination with a waiver from a varsity sport) can fulfill the student's physical education requirement. To qualify, the student has been an active participant the entire season: excessive absences or long-term "non-performance" situations may prevent a student from qualifying for the waiver.

  • We are open to students who wish to twirl batons for the Marching Band. We ask that students wanting to pursue this role have some prior training. There are many camps, clinics, and classes available to students in the Central Ohio Area. We have had several students find success in this category of auxiliary. If you are interested and would like to learn more about Drum Majors and Majorettes please email us.

  • To support the activities and events of the band program, many parent volunteers are needed throughout the year. The parent association meets monthly (typically the 1st Wednesday of each month) for an hour to coordinate event volunteers and fundraisers.
